After thinking for several years about getting a piano, I finally stopped in at Jim's Piano store and bought myself a piano! They had a great selection of new and used pianos. FAQ

How often do I need to tune my piano?
Twice a year, but no less than once a year by a technician/tuner. Good times to tune it are in the fall, after the heat has been on for about one month and again in summer, after the air conditioning has been on for about one month. Embracing a regular tuning schedule ensures that the technician/tuner will spot any problems early and ensure that your piano always remains in top working condition.
What are the main things to look for when purchasing a quality piano?
You should strongly consider the following three points. First, you want to be sure that quality materials were used in the construction of the piano. Things like solid spruce for the soundboard, hard rock maple in the pinblock and an innovative action. Second, you should research who actually manufactured the piano...do they have a high level of experience and expertise, does the factory meet worldwide standards for quality and craftsmanship. Third, you want to be sure you are purchasing your piano from a service oriented dealer. How long have they been in business, are they experts in this area, what kind of service after the sale do they offer, and most importantly...do they actively promote and participate in the hobby of playing the piano!?
How large of a piano should I purchase?
You should purchase the largest piano that will comfortably fit your assigned space. Given that a piano is a long term investment, it is important to purchase the piano you will be happy with for a long time. The size and shape of your room as well as the accoutrements in the room all influence how well it will fill your space with music. Specialized piano retailers typically offer a service similar to interior designers where they will come to your home with a template and years of expertise to help you determine what size is best.
Is it okay to move a piano by myself?
In most cases, no. A piano is very heavy and has many moving parts. Not having the correct equipment exposes you and the piano to great harm. A piano is significant investment and should always be moved by a professional. The proper equipment and skill with leverage are often of more concern that mere weight.
What should I use to clean the finish on my piano?
Using a soft cloth (like a cotton t-shirt) is excellent material for cleaning your piano. Depending on the finish of your piano, the store where you purchased your piano should have an appropriate cleaner for both satin and polished finishes. You should not use abrasive cleaners or cleaners that include bleach or alcohol.
